Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council has formally recognised 11 former councillors by appointing them as Honorary Aldermen. The unanimous decision was approved at a special council meeting on 8 July 2026.
The appointees are David Allport, Gillian Burnett-Faulkner, Sylvia Diamond, Trevor Johnson, Paul Northcott, Mike Stubbs, Stephen Sweeney, Paul Waring, Ian Wilkes, Gillian Williams and John Williams. Each served on the council for at least 12 years and held significant positions including Mayor, Cabinet member, committee chair or group leader. Together they represent more than 190 years of combined public service.
What the honour means
The Honorary Aldermen title recognises those who have dedicated themselves to serving Newcastle-under-Lyme. The appointees will become ambassadors for the borough, attending important civic events throughout the year. They may use the Honorary Aldermen title for the rest of their lives.
Council Leader Jonathan Gullis said the position allows the council to recognise the dedication of former councillors who have contributed significantly to the community.
What happens next
The appointments bring the total number of Honorary Aldermen in the borough to 37. An inauguration ceremony will take place later this year.
