An Armed Forces veteran has been elected Mayor of Newcastle-under-Lyme following the Annual Council meeting. Cllr Christopher Bailey, 72, takes on the ceremonial role that has served the borough for over 700 years. He will represent Newcastle Under Lyme at hundreds of civic events, raise money for local charities and chair Full Council meetings throughout his term.
Bailey's journey reflects genuine achievement against the odds. Born in a cottage without electricity or indoor toilets, he served five years in the British Army as a Battery Clerk with the Royal Artillery, touring Germany and Northern Ireland. After leaving the forces, he worked 25 years at Michelin before returning to study and gaining a degree in Medieval History and Social Science at age 60.
Beyond his military service, Bailey has been a dedicated community figure in Newcastle Under Lyme and surrounding areas. He served as both a scout leader and cub leader in Kidsgrove, demonstrating long-term commitment to local young people. His wife Deborah will support him as Mayoress during his year in office.
Bailey has chosen two charities to support during his mayoral year: Bradwell Football Club and the Tri Service and Veterans Support Centre. Speaking about his appointment, he said veterans are often overlooked and can struggle to adapt to civilian life. "To be able to share my story and show what's possible means more than words can say," Bailey commented.
The Wolstanton councillor follows outgoing Mayor Robert Bettley-Smith, who raised £36,000 for his chosen charities during his year representing Newcastle Under Lyme. Bailey's focus on veteran support reflects his own experiences and commitment to helping others in similar circumstances navigate life after military service.
