Christopher Bailey, Mayor of Newcastle-under-Lyme, will attempt the world's fastest and Europe's longest zip line on Thursday, 1 October, to raise money for two local charities.
The Mayor and his wife, Mayoress Deborah, are taking on the Velocity Zip Wire Challenge at Penrhyn Quarry in North Wales. The line stretches just under one mile and riders can reach speeds exceeding 100mph.
Why the challenge?
The Mayor is fundraising for Bradwell Bombers and the Tri Service and Veterans Support Centre. He said the role of Mayor extends beyond civic duties to champion local organisations that benefit the borough.
"Being Mayor is about more than wearing the chains and attending civic events. It is about using the role to champion the people and organisations that make our borough such a special place," he said.
Bailey acknowledged his age — 73 — while emphasising the importance of the causes. "At the age of 73, I'm not entirely sure my family think this is my most sensible idea – but it is for two causes that are absolutely worth it!"
He highlighted that Armed Forces veterans deserve support, and that grassroots clubs like Bradwell Bombers provide young people with positive activities, teach teamwork and discipline, and strengthen communities.
How to donate
Anyone wishing to sponsor the Mayor can do so via his online donation page. All funds raised will support the two charities.
