Newcastle-under-Lyme’s first social supermarket is due to open next month, giving residents another way to access affordable food and essential household items.
Community Cupboard NUL CIC will launch the new service at 21 Andrew Place, Newcastle-under-Lyme, ST5 1DL, on Friday 9 October at 4pm.
The opening event is free and open to residents, community organisations, supporters and members of the media. The organisation says the social supermarket will be open to everyone and will use a token-based model.
A choice-led alternative
Social supermarkets sell food and household essentials at reduced prices, often using donated or surplus stock. Unlike an emergency food parcel, the model allows members to choose the items that are most useful to their household.
Community Cupboard says the new Newcastle-under-Lyme service is intended to provide a more sustainable form of support while protecting dignity and offering greater choice.
The organisation already provides emergency food parcels and essential items to families, individuals and pensioners experiencing financial pressure. Its stated aim is to make help easier to access while reducing the stigma that can prevent people from asking for support.
The social supermarket will operate alongside that existing work rather than replacing emergency help. Its town-centre location is next to The Junction Café and Printshop.

Community Cupboard describes the project as part of a wider mission to tackle food poverty, reduce avoidable food waste and bring local people together.
The Andrew Place premises will also provide a permanent base for the organisation. Details published by Community Cupboard say online opening arrangements and collection time slots will begin after the October launch.
Residents who want to attend the launch do not need to be existing users of the service. Local voluntary groups and organisations that support people through financial hardship have also been invited.
