Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council is inviting residents to nominate buildings, memorials and landmarks they believe deserve protection as part of the borough's local heritage.
The council is reviewing its register of locally important sites and wants local people to help identify which places should be included. The register currently contains 149 sites ranging from historic pubs and former civic buildings to war memorials, distinctive signs, sculptures and other familiar features that help document the borough's history.
What's already on the register
Among the sites already recognised are a waymarker in Bignall End, a historic ghost sign in Brunswick Street, Newcastle, a Methodist school in Kidsgrove, a mining sculpture in Silverdale, a pigsty in Wrinehill and war memorials across the borough.
What local designation means
Inclusion on the register does not provide the same statutory protection as national listing, but it ensures that a landmark's local historical, architectural and community importance can be properly considered when planning decisions are made.
How nominations are assessed
Suggestions will be assessed against criteria including authenticity, architectural and historical significance, visual importance and community value. Residents can submit photographs as part of the online nomination process.
Council Leader Jonathan Gullis said: "Our borough's heritage belongs to the people who live here. Local residents know which buildings, memorials and landmarks tell the story of their community. Once an important part of our local history is demolished or allowed to disappear, it is gone for good. We want development and regeneration, but it must respect the character, identity and traditions of the towns and villages that make our borough special."
Cllr. Gullis added: "Whether it is a historic building, an old sign, a memorial or a landmark that generations of residents have grown up with, we want to hear about it. This is an opportunity to celebrate pride in our borough, protect the places that matter and create a lasting record for future generations."
The deadline for nominations is 7 September 2026.
