Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council is launching a major safety campaign this Friday at the Guildhall designed to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour across the borough. The "Safer Newcastle" campaign runs from 10am to 2pm and brings together police, housing providers and businesses to showcase the support available to residents, workers and visitors in Newcastle Under Lyme.
A new WalkSafe app forms the centrepiece of the safety drive, allowing residents to share their live location with trusted contacts and locate 20 newly-designated safe spaces across Newcastle Under Lyme. The app also marks licensed venues signed up to the "Ask for Angela" safety scheme, which helps people in danger at venues discreetly request assistance. The scheme is backed by two years of funding from the Violence Reduction Alliance.
Local businesses can sign up to a free membership programme offering guidance on crime prevention and tackling shoplifting. Michelle Hopper, Neighbourhood Delivery Manager at the council, said the initiative aims to reassure the public and demonstrate how local partners are working together to improve safety in Newcastle Under Lyme.
The campaign reflects a commitment to ensure that everyone feels confident and welcome, whether visiting the town during the day, working locally or enjoying Newcastle Under Lyme's evening economy. The free Guildhall event provides an opportunity for residents to learn more about the support services and safety measures now available across the borough.
