Reconstruction work is under way on a prominent historic building in Newcastle-under-Lyme High Street that has suffered structural damage to its upper section.
The building is located within the Newcastle Town Centre Conservation Area. The structural damage had become a safety issue, prompting Newcastle Borough Council officers to liaise with the owner to ensure the building is made safe.
Work and Planning Permission
The reconstruction includes partial demolition and rebuild of a wall. Planning permission for the works was granted earlier in the year, though delays occurred before work commenced.
Borough council officers will approve the works in line with building regulations once completed.
Scaffolding and Street Impact
Extensive scaffolding extends into the street due to the height of the building and the safety risk of building collapse. The council stated this scaffolding can be redesigned and amended as works progress.

Jonathan Gullis, Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council Leader and Cabinet member for Planning and Town Centres, said the council wants the High Street to be vibrant and attractive to continue drawing visitors and investment. He acknowledged the delays by the owner in starting work and said the council looks forward to seeing progress continue as quickly and efficiently as possible.
