More than 1,000 young artists from across Newcastle Under Lyme have created a striking tribute to Queen Elizabeth II. Their paintings are now on display at Keele in Town as part of the borough council's annual Britain in Bloom competition. The exhibition celebrates what would have been the late Queen's centenary year, with children exploring her life and love of the natural world.
The council's judges selected winners from 60 finalists across 18 schools in Newcastle Under Lyme. Eight-year-old Leah Jiang from Seabridge Primary School won the under-10s category with a powerful artwork showing children holding hands around the earth, surrounded by animals and landmarks. Her piece conveys a message about protecting the planet through teamwork.
The Dudson class from Bluebell School claimed the older age group award with an eye-catching 3D creation made entirely from recycled materials, including newspaper cuttings. The 12 and 13-year-olds impressed judges with their innovative approach to the Queen's centenary theme.
The free exhibition runs at Keele in Town, Newcastle Under Lyme, Monday to Friday from 9am to 4.30pm. Borough Mayor Christopher Bailey will present certificates and prizes to winning artists on Wednesday, 17 June. Local residents are invited to visit and see how Newcastle Under Lyme's young people have celebrated the late Queen's legacy.
